Directed by: Hannah Fidell.
Starring: Taissa Farmiga, Ben Rosenfield.
6 Years is the film that follows a young couple going through a rough patch in their relationship.
Essentially, there wasn't much to this movie. Much like the film Some Girl(s) (2013), it was more of a character study and window view into the minds and lives of these people.
What I liked about this film was the honesty it portrayed. It showed a real and true relationship where everything isn't perfect. It also showed how unstable and volatile love can make you and the consequences of that. I definitely was able to relate to the female character in this and how she reacted to some of the situations she was put in; for example, it showed her being (unintentionally) aggressive and having real emotions which I don't think is often seen in films. Girls/women in film are often shown as weak and pushovers but, from my experience, it's almost the opposite.
Whilst the film didn't have much substance and was a bit stiff at times, it kind of worked. Life isn't always the action packed, instagram filtered bullshit that films portray. Sometimes life is just still and happening and it doesn't always need to be over-dramatic and eccentric. I think the film was more about the script here and that's why, even though the film is lackluster, it wasn't bad and was enjoyable.

The cinematography was not dissimilar to that of Hannah Fidell's other work, A Teacher (2013). The whole movie was very cool toned and shot prettily, almost intimately. You could definitely see more of the emotions through the shots and the way the camera moved with the characters worked well at showing their characteristics virtually.
The acting in this film was great. Both Farmiga and Rosenfield managed to give honest performances and manage to match the characters feelings and behaviours to the writing. They didn't overplay the characters but still allowed them to be passionate and loud. Whilst their connection and relationship could have been worked on more, it was still lovely to watch these two work.
Overall, I did enjoy watching 6 Years but I think it's only a film a certain type of person will connect with. It wasn't a film that left me with me any significant changes to my life but the cinematography is something I'll remember.
