Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt follows the life of Kimmy, a 29 year old woman who has just been found from a bunker where she has lived for the past 15 years. We watch her finding out about the modern world and trying to get her life back together in New York City.
If you haven't heard of this show where have you been? Have you been in the bunker that Kimmy Schmidt was in?
The gifs from the show were all over my Tumblr and the adverts were everywhere so I thought I would have a watch and was surprisingly entertained.
This is probably one of the most original concepts I've ever heard of, in a while. The show is funny, witty, moralistic and with very likeable characters. As the last time Kimmy saw outside the bunker was in the 90's, the show features a lot of 90's jokes which work great considering the audience of this kind of show. The show also has a lot of modern jokes also which make the show even more relatable and enjoyable.
Although I do find this show funny and I enjoy watching it, there are definitely times where I feel like they're being too over-the-top and that doesn't personally appeal to me. More So, the show also includes a lot of jokes/conversations based on weight and they portray 'fat' in an extremely negative way almost and for someone who suffers with eating disorders, I can immediately see how this can affect someone. The show also pokes fun at other things which aren't in great taste and although it is isn't constant, it does kind of make me disconnect with the show.
If we were to take those negatives away then you have a generally lovely show full of quirkiness. It's also like New Girl gone rouge. The characters are mostly likeable and the episodes always have something interesting going on.
What I like most about the show, besides it's NYC back-drop, is the storyline. It's nice to watch Kimmy learn all these new things such as relationships and work. It's almost like a teenager becoming an adult. It's just an interesting character study, watching her grow, learn and mature.
All in all, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a good and entertaining show. With season 2 on it's way, maybe we can hope for less problematic jokes and more Kimmy being Kimmy.
